Boat Wood Trim Maintenance

Boat wood trim maintenance

Wood trim on boats adds warmth and elegance but requires consistent maintenance. Here is how to keep it in top condition:

Cleaning

Clean wood trim with fresh water and a mild wood cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals that strip the finish. Dry completely after cleaning to prevent water damage and rot.

Sealing and Finishing

Apply marine-grade varnish or oil to seal the wood and protect it from moisture. Reapply every season or whenever the finish shows wear. Multiple thin coats provide better protection than one thick coat.

Sanding

Sand wood trim lightly between coats of varnish to ensure proper adhesion. Use fine-grit sandpaper and always sand with the grain. This creates a smooth, professional finish.

Replacing Damaged Wood

Rotted or badly damaged wood should be replaced immediately. Rot can spread quickly and affect surrounding structures. Use marine-grade wood like teak or mahogany for replacements.
