Waterproofing Your Marine Seats

Waterproofing your marine seats

While marine-grade materials are designed to resist water, additional waterproofing extends their life. Here is how to add extra protection:

Seam Sealing

Water enters through needle holes in seams. Apply seam sealer to all stitching lines. This prevents water from penetrating through the thread holes and reaching the foam underneath.

Waterproofing Sprays

Marine waterproofing sprays add a hydrophobic layer to upholstery. Water beads up and rolls off instead of soaking in. Apply to clean, dry surfaces and reapply every few months.

Foam Protection

Wrap seat foam in waterproof barriers before covering. This adds a second line of defense if the outer cover is compromised. Closed-cell foam is naturally water-resistant and a good upgrade option.

Drainage

Ensure seats have proper drainage paths. Water that pools on seats eventually finds its way through seams. Slight angles and drainage holes prevent water from standing on surfaces.
